A man now living in Cork was fined a total of €300 for public order offences in Galway at Galway District Court this week. James Donoghue, with addresses at NFA, Fairgreen Hostel, and Michael Collins Road, Mervue, was fined €200 for using or engaging in threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour, with intent to provoke a breach of the peace at Loughgeorge, Claregalway, on 26 January 2006. He was fined €100 for being intoxicated on the same occasion. Similar offences at High Street, Galway, on 11 September 2005 were taken into consideration. Mr Sean Acton, solicitor, told the court that his client had been released from prison on 4 September 2006 and entered Cuan Mhuire treatment centre the following day. He completed a course there and remained there until 5 January last. Inspector John Galvin told the court that Gardaí responded to a call at High Street, Galway, on 11 September 2005. They met the defendant who was very much under the influence of alcohol. He was shouting and roaring. That court also heard that on 26 January 2006, the accused was very drunk, verbally abusive and aggressive. Mr Acton noted that his client, who has been alcohol free for eight or nine months, lives in a facility at Glanmire Road, Cork, for people who have been institutionalised. He has applied to do a computer course with FAS. Judge Mary Fahy told the defendant that she hoped he remained on that path. |
