A Newcastle man who pleaded guilty to being intoxicated was fined €100 at Galway District Court this week. Peter Hayden, with an address at 23 Gaelcarraig Park, was convicted of the offence, which occurred at Mill Street, Galway, on 2 January last. A second charge of failing to comply with a direction of Garda Grainne Cafferkey, was withdrawn by the State. A Garda told the court that the defendant was staggering on the footpath and was quite drunk. There was a strong smell of drink from his breath and his speech was slurred. Mr Hayden was directed to leave the area but he failed to comply with the direction and was subsequently arrested. The defendant apologised to the Garda on several occasions since. Mr Hayden's solicitor, Mr Adrian MacLynn, said his client has an alcohol dependency and is currently undergoing treatment. |
