Tom Connell, Director of Services for the environmental section at the City Council, has said there is no truth to the rumour that the HSE and the city council are to swap land at Merlin Park in return for a portion of the Shantalla Community Pitch.

Speaking to the Galway Independent, City Councillor Billy Cameron supported allegations made by fellow councillor Colette Connolly that land at Merlin Park would be disposed of in the near future. He claimed that this was to provide space for a new cemetery at Merlin Park, and would be traded in return for the land at Shantalla.

However, a spokesperson for the HSE said she was "unaware of land being disposed" at Merlin Park, although there is an arrangement that the HSE can apply for planning permission to extend the UHG car park onto a piece of land owned by the council which is adjacent to the Shantalla Community Pitch. The spokesperson reiterated that this application would have to go through the normal council procedures.
