The Mayor of Galway City has called on the Government to end the cap on local authority staff. Galway City Council has the lowest staff per capita numbers in the country and Mayor Niall O Brolcháin has claimed that some of the council's departments are struggling.

He said, "While it may be prudent to control local authority staff numbers in many cases, Galway City is struggling enormously as the fastest growing City in the country.

"Many departments, such as our parks department, our housing department, our environment department and our planning department are struggling badly as a result of insufficient staff numbers.

"Councillors are getting more and more calls about failures in the services provided. This is leading to increasing frustration and is causing enormous friction within the council."

The Green Party Mayor added, "The council chamber has become a pressure cooker, with tempers flaring on a regular basis due to unsatisfactory answers to questions asked.

"As Mayor, I feel it is my duty to point out a serious problem that has been caused by the rapid expansion of Galway City. I pointed out the deficiency in the local Government Fund and the Minister responded favourably. Now it is time for him to do likewise with the staffing level."
