Commercial trucks and lorries are to be banned from parking in the promenade area of Salthill, amid fears for the safety of motorists in the area. A recent incident in which a car collided with a parked commercial vehicle in the area prompted discussion at Monday night's meeting of Galway City Council, where it was decided that parking would be restricted from June of this year. Cllr Catherine Connolly, who tabled the motion, welcomed confirmation that the prohibition would be possible, saying the vehicles posed a serious risk. "The parking of trucks and commercial vehicles on the promenade is not only most unacceptable because it is a prime tourist area but also because it poses a danger to other road users and pedestrians. In view of the very serious dangers posed by the parking of these trucks, and particularly in view of the recent accident in which a car collided with such a vehicle which was parked on the promenade, urgent implementation of the regulations was absolutely necessary. "I welcome the news that appropriate steps are being taken and will be closely monitoring the situation, as it has now been nearly two years since I first tabled a motion on the parking of these trucks," she said. According to the Director of Services at Galway City Council, appropriate signage has been ordered and it is anticipated that the new measures will be in place by June. |
