Galway County Councillor Jim Cuddy has called on the Minister for the Environment, John Gormley, to provide additional funding and manpower to deal with the increased incidences of flooding in the Oranmore Electoral Area.

The call follows the much-publicised case of the Gilmore family who were forced to move out of their home due to flooding of the area. Flooding has increased in the area along with increased development.

"The position is that the Government are not providing the manpower to deal with the vast increase in flooding that is taking place.

"The Department of the Environment should help out by providing extra staff or funding to the local authority. Many people are left in a very bad state and have to make long detours as a result of the flooding and something needs to be done.

"There are up to 100 cases of flooding in the Oranmore electoral area alone. Unless Galway County Council are provided with the resources to address the problem the situation is only going to get worse.

"I have written to the Minister for the Environment asking for extra funding to be allocated and I hope that he will look positively on this request," he said.
