A Ballybane horse owner was fined €150 at Galway District Court this week after the animal was found wandering on the roadway near his home.

Dan Donovan, 39 Rinn Luachra, Ballybane, Galway, pleaded guilty to allowing the horse wander on his local housing estate on 24 September last.

Inspector McHugh said Gardaí received complaints that up to ten horses were wandering in the Rinn Luachra area around teatime on the date in question and that Garda Eoin Griffin, who went to investigate, found the horses running loose on the roadway. Garda Griffin, the inspector said, had to try to keep the horses confined to a green area in the estate to avoid them wandering out in front of traffic until they were taken into "safe custody".

Inspector McHugh informed Judge Fahy that the maximum fine for a first offence of this nature was €190.

Donovan told the judge he only owned one of the horses and he had nothing else to say. Imposing a €150 fine, the judge warned Donovan that if his horse had caused an accident and somebody had been hurt he could have been held responsible in a civil action.
