If you're likely to over indulge this Christmas, take a tip from Cancer Care West and work off the season's excesses by taking part in the seventh annual Burren Charity Challenge.

The three-week countdown to the Burren Charity Challenge has begun with individuals and teams from all over the West gearing up to take part in the charity sports event on Saturday 29 December 2007 at 1pm.

The challenge consists of a 10k run/walk or a 5k run and 40k cycle. It aims to raise €30,000 for the development of cancer support services for Cancer Care West and Tallaght Breast Unit, Dublin.

The race will start and finish at Cassidy's pub, Carron, where tired runners, walkers and cyclists can relax and wind down after the race at the celebration where they can enjoy music, entertainment and light refreshments.

As numbers for the race are increasing, the organizers are encouraging people to get their sponsorship packs in advance of the race. Registration will take place at Cassidy's in Carron from 10.30am on the day of the race, and sponsorship money can be paid during race registration.

Sharon Fitzpatrick, Cancer Care West's Fundraising Manager, is delighted with support for the event so far: "Support for the Burren Charity Challenge has been fantastic and Cancer Care West is thrilled to have been nominated as recipient charity for this year's event. We would like to emphasize that this is not just a Clare event. It is particularly relevant to anyone from western counties who can benefit from the accommodation, counselling and other support services that Cancer Care West offers. We encourage as many people from the western region as possible to come to Clare that afternoon to take part. This is your chance to contribute to the development of cancer support services in the West of Ireland."

Sponsorship cards are available by calling Cancer Care West at 091-529609 or by emailing: This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
