Ward off the winter blues

As the winter approaches, it gets harder to keep active. However, the benefits far outweigh the pain, writes Avril Horan.

A new €500,000 mental health campaign has been launched across the country to encourage mental health awareness. The launch tied in with World Mental Health day on 10 October.

As the winter creeps in, it is more important than ever to ward off the winter blues. The best way to do this is to keep active, both physically and mentally.

The gym is a fantastic way to lift your spirits on a dull evening. The trick is to get there. Just get off the couch and get your butt in the door of the gym and already your mood will improve.

All gyms across the city will devise a tailor-made exercise routine specifically for you. This takes into account age, any previous injuries, health problems and your personal goals. It is vital to consult your doctor before undertaking an exercise regime but it is worth it.

There are many low impact options, which will help to tone your body and at the same time lift your spirits. Those who suffer from depression often have low levels of serotonin. Exercise can boost the level of serotonin in the brain.

And if the gym is simply not for you, a brisk walk along the Prom will have a similar effect.

If you can't get out and about, there are many classes on offer across the city, which will keep the mind active throughout the winter. It is easy to curl up on the couch and watch television as the winter takes hold, but in the long run, this could have a detrimental impact on your physical and mental well-being.
