Heart and lungs Walking is an aerobic exercise, which means that when you walk you are making your heart, lungs and blood vessels work harder than normal. By overloading these parts a little you are training them to become more efficient; you become more aerobically fit. Arthritis prevention Arthritis is a disease that inflames the joints of the body. Recent studies have shown that regular walking strengthens the muscles and ligaments attached to arthritic joints and, by doing so, can help relieve some of the pain. Bone loss/osteoporosis Physical inactivity is one of the contributing factors that can lead to profound bone loss. Regular weight bearing exercise plays an important role in reducing this process. Muscle tone Walking conducted at a moderate, relaxed pace strengthens and tones the muscles of the calves, thighs, ankles and feet. More vigorous walking involves the use of the arms and it exercises the upper body, stomach, hips and buttocks. Back pain One of the main reasons for posture complaints is the many hours spent in a sitting position. Walking gives you a chance to stretch and strengthen the muscles and joints responsible for causing back pain. Stress Studies conducted in recent years suggest that people who walk on a regular basis are better able to cope with the stress and strain of modern living. Fat loss Walking at a brisk pace will burn off approximately 33 calories in one hour. Fitness speeds up the body's metabolic rate resulting in the burning off of more calories during the day. Circulation Walking has become a well-established element in heart care programmes. It has been shown that the muscles of the leg play an important part in helping the heart circulate blood around the body. Energy Walking can alleviate both mental fatigue and physical exhaustion. By relieving the mental fatigue new reserves of physical energy may be discovered. Information compiled by the Galway Walking Club on www.galwaywalkingclub.homestead.com. |
