A County Mayo hill-walking club has issued an invite to the public to climb a mountain in a bid to raise money for a local hospice organisation.

As part of the Joyce Country Challenge, Lake District Hill-Walking club are inviting inexperienced walkers on a 14.5km trek around the hills of Co. Galway and Co. Mayo on Saturday 21 July.

Two walks have been set out for the fundraising mission that will raise funds for the Hospice Foundation in Galway and Mayo. A 30km trek will challenge experienced walkers with a 1,900m ascent. The less experienced walkers will embark upon a 14.5km trek around Lough Nafooney.

"The Joyce Country Challenge gives you an opportunity to walk one of Ireland's hidden gems. Taking the plateau of 'Maumtrasna' and the 'Devil's Mother', this circuit of Lough Nafooey is an area of natural beauty often overlooked by Ireland's walkers," said a spokesperson for the Lake District Hillwalking Club.

The trek boasts outstanding views of The Turks, Mweelrea, Killary harbour, the Sheefrys and the Western Lakes. More details are available on www.lakedistricthwc.com.
