Galway residents are being encouraged to walk for a healthier heart in aid of local charity organisation Croí.

Croí has just announced details of this year's 'Walking for a Healthier Heart' programme, aimed at people who have experienced a cardiac event or who may suffer from heart disease. This programme is a follow-on from a successful project launched last year.

The programme is being co-ordinated by walk leader, Vincent O'Rourke, who is a member of the Croí cardiac club in Galway. Vincent has personal experience of heart disease.

As part of the programme, two walks are being planned over the coming month. The first walk will take place on Sunday 16 September at Renville Park, Oranmore meeting at 11.30am in the car park. The second walk will take place on Sunday 21 October at Coole Park, Gort again meeting at 11.30am at the car park. Both walks will take approximately 30 to 45 minutes, however, there will be a shorter option. These walks are designed for all levels of fitness and participants can walk at their own pace.

Announcing details of the programme, Croí Nurse, Irene Gibson said: "The benefits of physical activity are well known: helping to reduce weight, cholesterol, blood pressure and stress. The Croí ‘Walking for a Healthier Heart' programme aims to motivate people to increase their physical activity levels, particularly now as we approach winter when it is easier to opt out of exercise due to shorter days and varying weather."

Participation in these walks is free of charge, but heart patients must have clearance from their GP to participate, and they will be requested to sign a form to this effect.
