Spring, summer, autumn, winter, there is nothing quite like a sun-kissed glow to make a gal (or guy for that matter) look and feel better. And as fans of the latest hit show, ‘How to Look Good Naked’, will know, a tan will also go towards disguising lumps and bumps, and can also have a slimming effect.

The first port of call for most women these days is fake tan in a bottle. There is something about tan in a bottle that, when its done right, can give a gal a major boost. It’s not about going on a drastic diet, hitting the gym like crazy, or going under the surgeon’s knife to achieve a makeover; it’s a simple trick, which we can all use, to get a naturally bronzed look and make us feel better about ourselves.

Of course we have all seen fake tan disasters. But if you follow some simple tips, a streaky tan will be a thing of the past. Preparation is crucial, whether you are applying the product yourself, or getting a beautician to do it for you. Here are some top tips for tan preparation:

Ten top fake tan tips

  1. Always exfoliate before applying fake tan. Pay particular attention to hands, feet, knees and elbows, and moisturise well, especially any dry patches. It is better to prepare the skin in advance, as some fake tans can streak with moisturiser. Best results are obtained when applied to clean, dry skin.
  2. Use latex gloves or mitts to avoid orange palms. These are available in most pharmacies.
  3. Paint finger and toe nails to protect the nails and to avoid staining.
  4. Use a barrier cream or ointment, such as Vaseline, around the hairline and eyebrows to prevent staining.
  5. To achieve natural looking hands and feet, use only what's left over on your hands or gloves, as dryer skin areas really absorb the colour.
  6. If you plan to sleep in it before showering then wear your oldest PJs or tracksuit.
  7. If you are tired of the dance that is needed to apply fake tan on your back, then back applicators are available for those of us who are not double-jointed. Or if you can, ask a friend to do it for you.
  8. Use a buffing cloth to remove heavy residue before dressing. This should be done at least 20 minutes after application, so the tan is entirely dry.
  9. To maintain the tan for as long as possible, use a tan enhancer and plenty of moisturiser, twice a day if possible.
  10. Avoid saunas and long baths to keep the tan for as long as possible. Tan removers are great to avoid that streaky look when it starts fading, and a good bronzer is also a good trick to finish off that glow.

There is a certain reassurance at having fake tan professionally applied. With the expertise of the beautician, you know you are in safe hands, whether it is being applied directly to the skin or via a spray tan.

Tanning technicians are industry trained and certified in both the latest tanning equipment and lotions, thus being able to assist you in developing a personal tanning programme that's right for you.

This is especially true when it comes to sunbed tanning. It is important to have a specific programme devised for your own skin type by the experts. It is important to note that some oils, cosmetics and deodorants can increase sensitivity to UV radiation. The Irish Cancer Society advise caution when it comes to sunbed use and say not to exceed 20 sessions per year.
