Stress, men and food

Foods rich in tryptophan are important in maintaining a balance of serotonin levels in the body thereby controlling stress, writes Dr Bhatti.

Men, like women, tend to over eat when under stress or emotionally challenged. It is however less obvious with men because we live in a society where it is more acceptable for men to be over weight. Women are also more likely to seek help with weight and health issues.

However, in many cases over eating has more potential for harm in men because of the type of food that men tend to go for. Fatty foods, chips, fries, pizza, fizzy drinks and alcohol are some of the most unhealthy foods and beverages on this planet and Irish men, in particular, often consume these foods on a daily basis.

There are some healthier options that are more acceptable in male circles, including wholemeal toast and, depending on cholesterol levels or other medical conditions, omelettes or scrambled egg for breakfast.

The bottom line is, if men don't begin to change their dietary habits early in life by introducing healthy options, their health is going to deteriorate fairly quickly in middle age.

Gradually change towards healthier food and lifestyle. Over the weeks you will find your health begin to improve. You will also start to look forward to the healthier day because your energies are up and you look and feel much better.

The key to keeping stress in control is keeping the many chemicals within the body that control mood in balance. Serotonin is a chemical released within the body that works to control mood. When stressed it is a good idea to eat a diet rich in complex carbohydrates. These help to release serotonin into the body and elevate mood.

Some good food sources of complex carbohydrates include broccoli, squash, brown rice and wholemeal bread.
