Bad backs, squished up toes and hobbit feet are all side effects of wearing uncomfortable shoes, but most of us suffer them gladly to look good. Now, however, there is a cure for the third of these afflictions, and it's available here in Galway. For most of us, hard, callused feet are a fact of life and it's not something we can do much about. Regular moisturising, scrubbing them with an exfoliating brush and wearing moisturiser-rich socks to bed all help, but even the hardiest body brush recoils in horror at the sight of a few years' worth of hard skin on the soles of your feet, and the effects of most of these treatments are minimal. A new treatment, available as part of Heaven Scent Beauty Spa's fabulous pedicure, promises to fix this problem like no other has ever done. And it delivers. I'll admit I was a bit sceptical at the thought of all that hard skin, including a few unsightly lumps, coming off the soles of my feet. I've done my best with all of the above methods, but hard as I try I've never managed to shift it. The new callus peel part of the pedicure, however, is something special. After your feet have been soaked in a foot spa for a few minutes and the cuticles have been softened and tidied up, the callus peel, which is something like a chemical peel for the face, is applied. The peel looks like a very thin sheet of white-tack, and is spread over the affected area, where it gently adheres to the hard skin. It's left on for 15 minutes, and then gently taken off. Unlike many chemical peels, it doesn't sting or burn, and the only sensation you feel is a coolness when it's put on. After this, the dead skin is gently scraped off using a plastic tool, and then filed down, as it would be in a normal pedicure. Ruth, who gave me my treatment, was quick to stress that no metal implements are used during the treatment, and each one is carried out with a brand-new file. Having been disappointed with the minimal effect of pedicures in the past, it's fair to say any cynicism I had about the treatment before doing it was dispelled by the softness of my feet afterwards. For once, a 'miracle treatment' that really works has arrived. For particularly bad hard skin, it's recommended that you get the treatment at two-week intervals until it is gone.
