Galway Circus Projects’ ‘Sorcas Beag’, which trains children in juggling, acrobatics, unicycle, tightrope walking and a host of other activities, begins another year of classes on Thursday 13 September.

ImageTrained professionals run Sorcas Beag in a non-competitive manner. The skills that are practiced in these classes are proven to develop co-ordination, concentration, balance, endurance, group skills and self-esteem. But overall, it is about fun.

“Children are given the opportunity to showcase new talents at a winter and end of year show,” Karin Wimmer, Sorcas Beag’s Project Manager told the Galway Independent. “We never force children into performing in a public arena if they do not feel comfortable doing so…there’s always a lot of work to be done backstage so children are always encouraged to work in the areas that they feel comfortable in.”

As well as the usual classes, 2007 sees Sorcas Beag's involvement in the first of many youth exchanges. “In October Circus Cabuwazi in Berlin will hold its international youth circus festival and we are invited. Seven members of Sorcas Beag are currently working on an act, which they created themselves, to showcase in Germany. It’s really exciting for children to be given the opportunity to take part in youth exchanges, experience new places, make new friends, learn new skills and realize their own potential in this non-competitive manner,” added Ms Wimmer.

The classes will begin at 4pm on Thursday, 13 September in St Joseph’s Community Centre, Shantalla. Classes are open to children eight years and upwards. Bursaries are available to those from low-income families.
