The Galway Institute of Wellbeing is a member of the National Register of Reflexologists, set up by former Tanaiste Mary Harney in 2006, so members of the public can “discern between those therapists who have achieved a professional training and those who have not.”
In Ireland there are twelve established accredited schools and The Galway Institute of Wellbeing is one of them. These schools are affiliated to the National Register of Reflexologists (Ireland), www.nationalreflexology.ie, which was established in 1998 as a non-profit making registered body. It aims at maintaining a high standard of education and training in reflexology, as well as compiling and maintaining a National Register of Reflexologists. The Institute of Wellbeing offers training for would-be reflexologists. The course it offers is wide and all inclusive. It will prepare students for work in primary care and prevention in the general community. It covers such topics as the history and origins of reflexology, anatomy and physiology, diet and nutrition, old remedies and cures, relaxation and meditation as well as theory and practice of reflexology.
According to Marie-Therese Shelly, who runs the course, “The emphasis on the first half of the course is building up the student’s physical and psychological wellbeing - the old cliché rings true - healer heal thyself first.” Students’ pay on a per-class basis, and the course will begin on Saturday, 29 September.
