| Rehab's People of the Year honoured |

The recipients of this year's Rehab Galway People of the Year awards were presented with their awards at a gala reception, which took place in the Clayton Hotel on Saturday. The winners were nominated by members of the public for their work and contribution in a variety of fields, which contributed to the betterment of the lives of people in their communities. An independent panel of adjudicators then selected the nominees, including former Galway Person of the Year Dr Jack McCann and Mary Bennett. The award winners were: Brendan O'Connor, Oranhill for his involvement with Cois Cladiagh; Ray O'Connor, Roscahill, for his association with Croí and his crucial role in motivating others to partake in a healthy pastime and help thousands of others who are not fortunate enough to be able to do so; Ann Tierney, Tuam for her work in organising a memorial and garden in honour of those who died in the crash of the Halifax EB134 in Tuam; Valerie Swanwick, Kilconnel and Ballinasloe for her work with Ballinasloe Mental Health Association; Liam O'Carroll, Oranmore for his work with Oranmore Development Association; James Harris, Galway for his charity Making Galway Proud, Marie Moran Greaney, Abbeyknockmoy for her enormous contribution to arts, culture and entertainment not alone in her parish and county; Mary Lane Heneghan, Craughwell for her work as an advocate for people with cystic fibrosis and St Brendan's Training Centre in Loughrea; Helen Concannon, Barna for her work as a President's Awards leader; Merlin Park Walkers for the success of their fundraising and for the obvious enjoyment their members experience when partaking in their annual strolls; and Dr Kieran Daly, Ray J Rooney and Neil Johnson of Croí, The West of Ireland Cardiology Foundation for their efforts in making a massive difference to the lives of everyone here in the west. |
