Mental health organisation GROW is looking for support from the people of Galway city and county as Barry McKiernan attempts the highest bungee jump in the world in Cape Town, South Africa on Friday 23 November to raise funds for the organisation.

GROW, which helps people who have suffered, or are suffering from mental health problems, will be organising fund-raising activities in Galway, the proceeds of which will be allocated to GROW's mental health services. They are asking for local businesses and communities to get involved.

In an effort to raise awareness of GROW's cause, Mr McKiernan will be travelling to Cape Town to the Bloukran's river where the jump stands at 216m high, almost twice the height of Dublin's Spire. He hopes to raise awareness and funds of up to €100,000, which will be put towards assisting the work of GROW, and extending the Information Line opening hours. The money raised in each county will be allocated to GROW's services in that county.

Speaking in advance of the trip, Mr McKiernan said he hopes to raise awareness of the organisation through this hair-raising jump.

"As I jump off the Bloukran's Bridge, I will be absolutely and 100 per cent consumed by fear, and my only lifeline will be the bungee cord. For thousands of people across Ireland, GROW is their bungee cord ? their only lifeline, their only support, their only hope. By undertaking this leap, I am hoping to raise awareness of the great work GROW does, and with your help, to raise funds so they can expand the support they provide to people who desperately need it."
