The herb Saw Palmetto is a natural remedy that is recommended for prostate enlargement.
The condition known as enlarged prostate is medically called prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The prostate gland is located just below a male's bladder and surrounds the top portion of the tube that drains urine from the bladder (urethra). The gland's primary function is to produce most of the fluids in semen. Factors that may effect the development of prostate problems include having a family history of the problem. Prostate enlargement is also more common in American and European men than in Asian men and, for some unknown reason, married men seem to suffer with the problem more than single men. If you suffer from any of the above symptoms, it is extremely important that you visit you doctor because complications may develop. For example, infection, bleeding and kidney damage. A serious complication would be if the bladder becomes severely compromised and unable to empty. Certain lifestyle measures may help alleviate symptoms of prostate enlargement. Avoid letting your bladder get too full, limit alcohol consumption, take regular exercise and keep warm. Drink fewer fluids in the evening (although it is essential that adequate water is consumed during the day as dehydration will exacerbate the problem) to help with night problems. A naturopath will recommend a course of acupuncture treatments alongside herbal remedies. One herb that is recommended for prostate enlargement is Saw Palmetto. This is an extract from ripened berries of the Saw Palmetto shrub. Pumpkin seeds may also be beneficial. High-fat junk foods and environmental toxins can contribute to prostate problems, so introduce a healthy diet with a wise nutritional programme. The most important change to make is to eliminate all unhealthy fat from the diet and, if overweight, go on a weight-reducing programme. A high-fibre diet helps reduce your risk of prostate cancer by slightly lowering your body's levels of reproductive hormones. In population studies, men who eat the most fibre, from beans, whole grains, fruits and vegetables, are least likely to develop prostate cancer.
