The signs to look out for - and these can be seen within 12 hours or less - are excitement, nervousness, trembling, muscle spasm, vomiting, diarrhoea, seizures, excessive thirst, excessive urinating and coma and death. The last two are rare but can happen. If your pet is showing any of these signs, it is vital you get them to your vet immediately. You will need to know what chocolate and how much was eaten. Some chocolates are more toxic than others. For example, baking chocolate has eight to ten times the amount of theobromine than milk chocolate. Your pet may need IV fluids, its stomach pumped and various meds to help it recover. So if you want to give your pet a treat, get the chocolate from the pet shop.

In case your wondering why chocolate is not toxic to humans, we are lucky that we can break it down and excrete it more efficiently than our pets.

Spot-on wormers
We have been asked how spot-on wormers work. The spot-on wormer works as it is absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream and thus digested by the worms. The tablet form is dissolved in the stomach and them into the bloodstream. The worms live in the gut and feed by biting the gut wall where they digest the blood with the wormer. I hope that makes it a little easier for you.

Finally, there has been an increase in both parvo and cat flu in the last few weeks. We ask everyone to make sure their pets are vaccinated and, if they are not, to do so immediately. Do not bring unvaccinated puppies out walking until they have got their parvo shots
