Every year about this time, people begin thinking about the New Year and the changes it will bring. Some people make New Year's resolutions to lose weight, start exercising more, work less; others will attempt to quit smoking. The Pfizer 'No Butts 2008' smoking cessation roadshow will be at Galway Shopping Centre, on Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 February 2008. With smoking levels in Ireland on the increase, the roadshow aims to capture the attention of smokers who are serious about quitting. The Office of Tobacco Control reports 24 per cent smoking prevalence in Ireland. A total of 7,000 people die from smoking related disease in Ireland every year and smoking is one of the single most preventable causes of illness and death. Trained nurses and smoking cessation counsellors will be on hand to give smokers, their families and friends advice on how to go about quitting smoking. Those visiting the roadshow will also be able to get a photograph taken of their face and through the use of smart technology, see how smoking can affect their appearance by noticeably ageing their skin. The effects of smoking in terms of ageing are significant and nicotine can add years to a smoker's appearance, with smoker's faces often more lined, gaunt and possibly with a grey pallor. |
