Making the most of life with arthritis

Budapest in Hungary is one spa city that offers a range of mineral bathing options. Far cheaper than anything to be found in Ireland, the city's public baths (the Szechenyi Baths) are both indoor and outdoor, and can be up to 40° Celsius. Bathing is a popular activity for Hungarians, most of whom take a weekly or even a daily trip to take the waters. The relief provided by bathing in the mineral waters is substantial, and the option of a low priced, almost medical-type massage at the same venue is well worth taking up for anyone whose condition extends to muscular pain.

Closer to home, a lot of the spa treatments, which have recently become popular, are a godsend for arthritis sufferers.

One option available in Galway might be expensive, but it certainly does the job on arthritis pain, as well as being a nice, relaxing treat!

The Twelve Hotel in Barna offers a combination of a seaweed bath and full body massage which, though not a medical procedure, might as well be tailor-made for arthritis sufferers.

In France, seawater therapies are often prescribed by doctors for a range of conditions, and the bath option available at the Twelve might well fit the bill here.

Soaking for up to an hour in a seaweed bath loosens out aching muscles and stiff joints. According to Vhi Healthcare, seaweed detoxifies the body by stimulating the release of excess body fluids. Toxins are then replaced with the plant's minerals, including potassium and iodine.

At the Twelve, the bath is prepared in the privacy of a hotel bedroom, and a 30-minute soak is recommended for the best result. After this, a full body massage with a special Voya oil, the world's only seaweed oil, will ensure that any knots or aches are ironed out. Matilda, one of the hotel's therapists, is also trained as a physical therapist, so can help out if you let her know the ins and outs of your condition.

While arthritis is a pain, the condition can be managed to minimise the pain and maximise the quality of life. However, for serious conditions always consult your doctor.
