Despite its many benefits, a lot of women are still afraid of wearing lipstick due to the wide margin of error involved in choosing the right shade. However, if you follow a few simple guidelines, it is much easier to get it right.

The main issue you must address when searching for a lip colour is whether you have a cool or warm complexion.

One of the easiest ways to do this is with the jewellery test. Hold a silver piece of jewellery and a gold piece up against your skin at the same time and see which flatters your skin tone best.

If it is gold, then you have yellow undertones and will suit warmer tones, while silver compliments skin with blue undertones that are better suited to cooler colours.

Warm shades usually include an orange tint, such as coral, peach, melon and brick red. Meanwhile, colours such as mauve, cherry, plum and crimson contain much cooler tones. Another handy indicator is to examine a tester version of lipsticks on a sheet of white paper to discover their dominant colour.

Hair colour can also have a huge bearing on which lip colour to choose.

Those of us with paler skins can often be afraid to take risks with colour but Dita Von Teese is a prime example of how to pull off dramatic shades. This true red flatters her skin tone, while setting off her raven locks.

Blondes are usually better suited to more subtle shades of pink and peach for a more delicate, natural look.

However, if talk of undertones and warm complexions leaves you more confused, why not take the easy option and try the Made For Me Naturals range from L'Oreal Paris.

This range of nine nude lip colours is divided into different sections, taking account of hair colour and skin tone.

Blondes can try out Nude and Taffetta, while dark brunettes are advised to stick to shades including Sienna and Organza.

The L'Oreal Colour Riche Made For Me Naturals range is available from Boots and selected pharmacies nationwide.
