Despite the huge surge in the popularity of mineral make-up in the last 12 months, I had never really given it a try for myself. However, when I heard that US sensation BareMinerals had made its way to Galway, I decided it was time to go over to the dark side!

On arriving at Natural Serenity on Augustine Street for my trial run, my therapist Yvonne explained the ethos of the brand to me. The Bare Escentuals range is made of ground-down minerals, which actually benefit your skin rather than clogging your pores like many other foundations, hence the motto 'so pure you can sleep in it'.

Being a big fan of glowy foundation, I initially struggled to understand how a powder could give the same effect, without looking powdered and cakey. However, I put my concerns aside and gave it a go. The starter kit from Bare Escentuals contains a dvd, booklet, two shades of foundation, a bronzer and a 'mineral veil', as well as three brushes. The powders can be used as both concealer and foundation, using different brushes. The bronze powder then subtly adds definition and shade, before the mineral veil seals the make-up for a long lasting effect.

While the 'swirl, tap and buff' system may sound a little tricky to begin with, it's actually quite a fun way to apply your make-up and leaves you with a concealed and soft effect that is perfect for daytime wear. While I would usually go for a heavier look for night, this foundation is perfect for anyone looking for great coverage without that heavy feel. The finish of the mineral veil results in a natural but glowing complexion that you could almost pass off as your own!

The BareMinerals Starter Kit, worth €220, is currently retaiing at €67.50 from Natural Serenity, Augustine Street.
