Marie Madden navigates the world of life coaching to see what exactly is to be gained from seeking instruction on the big issues

With every bookshop in Galway stacked with self-help books, it seems that everybody is looking for a way to improve their life. Whether it’s getting that promotion, improving your confidence or changing your life direction, there are a number of options to help you along the way.

Regardless of your goal, motivation is the key and what better way to reach your full potential than getting your very own life coach. Using a combination of psychology and counselling, life coaching offers an objective look at your life and advice on how to live it to the full.

While the concept of taking on a life coach may seem a bit strange, the process is very simple. It can take place in person or over the telephone and simply involves communicating with your coach to get the best results for you. Coaching usually takes place over four to six sessions and can cover areas such as money, family and friends, personal growth, love life, career, fun and creation, physical environment and health.

Coaching works for several reasons: the relationship between the coach and the client creates momentum; the client develops more skills to enable them to move forward faster; and the goals that are set are more definable.

One of the most in-demand areas of life coaching is career guidance. Most of us spend a lot of our time in our careers, often even more than we do with our families, so it is very important to find a balance. With many workers developing a tendency to be overcome by projects and deadlines, career coaching offers a chance to look at this aspect of your life in more detail. Career coaching has a lot to offer those who seek to get a life balance between work and other important roles in their life.

Another less well-known aspect of coaching is health. Lots of us take our health for granted, especially when we are young and in our prime. There is a lot of talk about having a pension, so as to have a comfortable retirement and old age, but what good will it be if you are too weak or sick to enjoy it? Health coaching focuses in on building awareness on what exactly you are doing in relation to all aspects of your life that affect your health now and in the long term.

Becoming a parent can be one of the most stressful and transitory stages in anyone’s life and a mix of hormones, nerves and fear can sometimes make communicating with your partner difficult. This is another area where life coaching is becoming more and more popular. By talking to your life coach, you can express your fears and thoughts about the upcoming birth and the reality of taking care of a child afterwards.

Discipline of young children can also be a tough hurdle to overcome but by speaking with trained professionals, you are enabled to take a more objective view of the situation and formulate a plan to deal with any hurdles you may face.

There was a time when life coaching was only used by high-powered businessmen and Hollywood celebrities, but it has become much more common in recent times, with many practices set up all over Galway. So if you’re feeling stressed or just need some more direction in your life, a life coach could be the answer!
