Kenya native Ms Mary Anne Wangari has thanked the members of Galway Rotary for their help in relation to the Kenyan orphanage she has developed in recent years.

Many in Galway know Ms Wangari for her work in fundraising locally for the orphanage in her native Ikumbi. Ms Wangari, who runs the Harambee charity shop in Newcastle Road, has lived in Ireland for 17 years and devotes much of her time to providing resources for the Ikumbi orphanage.

The orphanage, which is run by Ms Wangari's mother Sarah Mawalimu and her grandmother Naomi, looks after 65 orphans and was built last year by a group of Irish fundraisers. Ms Mawalimu, a retired primary school teacher, has also taken many children orphaned by AIDS into her own home to care for them in recent years.

Ms Wangari spoke to Galway Rotary members on the AIDS orphanage in Kenya that Galway Rotary supported last year. Galway Rotary is a service organisation that meets weekly in the Meyrick hotel and has been active in the Galway community since 1966.
