Good nutrition should be central to any allergy treatment, writes Dr Bhatti

Most people are unaware that they are sleeping with anywhere from 100,000 to ten million dust mites. These microscopic organisms are related to spiders and are too small to see with the naked eye. They live in many homes, especially beds. They particularly thrive in warm, humid environments, eating dead skin cells and nesting in dust-collecting bedding, fabric, carpet and furnishings.

Dust mites leave a residue behind that is a combination of faeces, decaying bodies and dust. This residue often becomes airborne. Most people are oblivious to this residue because it does not affect them in any way. If however, you find yourself allergic to this residue you may experience a range of symptoms including wheezing, sneezing, watery eyes and runny nose, nasal congestion, itchy nose, swollen, blue-coloured skin under your eyes, postnasal drip, cough, irritability, facial pressure and pain in some cases some irritation and itch. One treatment for dust mite allergy is avoidance, i.e. taking measures to minimize the number of dust mites in your home. Rigorous cleaning practices, especially in your bedroom, can help reduce dust mite residue to a level where it no longer causes bothersome problems. While you can't completely eliminate dust mites from your home, it is possible to significantly reduce their number. Cover your mattress and pillows in dust-proof or impermeable covers and use synthetic materials as opposed to wool or down bedcovers. Maintain low humidity in your home. You may find a dehumidifier or air conditioner helpful in keeping humidity low. Dust mites are killed from sheets and linen when washed in hot water (130 to 140 F). When cleaning surfaces, use a damp mop or rag instead of a dry cloth. Vacuum regularly to help eliminate mite residue. However, if you are particularly sensitive it is better if someone else vacuums for you and it is important to stay outside the room for up to 20 minutes after cleaning with a good strong vacuum cleaner. If your dust mite allergy is severe, flooring can be replaced with tile, wood or linoleum. In extreme cases, you may also consider replacing upholstered furniture and removing fabric curtains.
