Tuam pharmacist, Darragh O'Loughlin, has urged young people not to be
embarrassed when discussing particular ailments. Research undertaken by
the Irish Pharmaceutical Union (IPU), has found that young people under
25 are most likely to be embarrassed with people over 50 least likely
to be self-conscious.
Darragh O'Loughlin, Medwell Pharmacy, Tuam, said: "I would stress that
there is no need for people to feel shy or embarrassed in talking about
a particular condition. It is not worth suffering in silence when in
most cases conditions such as foot odour or warts which, in
pharmacists' experience, lots of people are embarrassed to talk about,
can be treated effectively with over the counter medication."
The
research shows that men and women are equally embarrassed to discuss
conditions such as body odour or irritable bowel syndrome. Living in an
urban or rural area has no impact on whether people are likely to get
sensitive health matters off their chest - both urban and city dwellers
are equally as likely to be embarrassed.
In overcoming their
embarrassment, two thirds of the people polled said they would value
the installation of semi-private consultation areas in pharmacies where
they could sit and potentially discuss sensitive conditions with a
pharmacist.
