Claregalway community in fight against heart disease E-mail

The community of Claregalway has taken a major step forward in the fight against heart disease.

Under the ‘Croí Lifeline Project’ a local defibrillator programme has been launched in Claregalway with a total of six people in the Claregalway community trained in early CPR and defibrillation.

The first defibrillator, which was sponsored by the Claregalway Hotel, has been located in the hotel. The second defibrillator, which has been sponsored by John Raftery of Centra, River Oaks, Claregalway, will be located shortly.

Speaking to the Claregalway Community, Emer Burke, a Croí Lifeline Project Co-ordinator, said: “The Claregalway Community Development Group and their supporters are to be commended for taking this initiative. Members of the community, who voluntarily stepped forward to be trained, are to be congratulated for showing such good community spirit. Hopefully the defibrillators will never have to be used, but having them readily available in cases of cardiac emergency, could literally mean the difference between life and death. Research shows that trained lay people with access to a defibrillator having witnessed a cardiac arrest and being able to respond within minutes can significantly enhance survival outcomes. Studies have shown that survival rates of up to 40 per cent and higher have been achieved in these circumstances.”

Ms Burke recommends that in the event of a person collapsing or becoming unconscious, the first step always is to call the Emergency Services on 999/112 (mobile) and ask for a Cardiac Ambulance if an arrest is suspected. The next step is to contact a local AED responder, if a defibrillator is available in your community.
