When buying new shoes parents should, always have both feet measured for length and width by a trained shoe fitter. A newly fitted shoe should be approximately 12 to 16mm longer than the longest toe. Avoid slip-on shoes. Shoes should be held on the foot with laces, straps or Velcro fastenings. Heel height should be no more than 4cm, lower for younger children. The heel should have a broad base and be made from a shock-absorbing material. Natural material uppers are best, i.e. leather. The toe area of the shoe should be foot-shaped and also deep enough to allow the toes to move freely and not be squashed. The shoes should fit exactly around the heel.

Another crucial aspect of the return to school will be the purchasing of schoolbooks, which can work out very expensive, especially if there are a number of children to consider. With the cost of returning to school increasing every year, it pays to shop around and to see if the books that are required can be bought second hand.

As school gets back into full swing, so do extra curricular activities and these are as important for the development of your child. Whether their interest is in art, sport or reading, all these can be nurtured in Galway. You do not need to invest a small fortune either; the initial cost might be high but the valuable lessons and friends your child will make through their designated activity will outweigh the cost.

All major sports stores will carry all your sporting needs and the selected club might supply any other requirements. If art is their game, you can pick up supplies on the cheap in supermarkets and invest in crayons and art brushes in an art supply shop for a top quality product.
