I have always been a very anxious person. Can you recommend some natural relief?

Everyone feels anxiety at some stage in their lives. Symptoms can range from restlessness, tension, irritability, impatience and poor concentration.

The herb passionflower was used as a folk remedy for anxiety and insomnia. However, there can be some side effects including nausea, vomiting, drowsiness and rapid heartbeat, so always consult a qualified naturopath or herbalist.

Valerian is also used in patients with mild anxiety. It takes about two to three weeks to work and should not be used for more than three months at a time.

Chamomile tea is also very effective. It can be taken several times a day, usually without any side effects unless an allergy to the plant is apparent.

Different types of bodywork are really helpful in alleviating anxiety. Massage and shiatsu are very effective, while some people find relief from breathing exercises, physical exercise, yoga, tai chi and meditation. All of these approaches require a regular practice with a qualified teacher.

Essential oils that are used for anxiety and nervous tension include bergamot, cypress, geranium, jasmine, lavender, melissa, neroli, rose, sandalwood and ylang-ylang. Lavender is the most common essential oil and forms the base of many relaxing blends.

Taking a combined multivitamin with adequate amounts of pantothenic acid, calcium, magnesium and other B vitamins is also important.

If you suffer from anxiety, you should always consult your family doctor before taking any natural or alternative remedies. Take regular walks in the fresh air. Try to use up the excess energy that anxiety creates in a proactive way rather then letting it disrupt your body and life. Take up some form of hobby or interest and try to have some fun. Laughing is a great cure. It releases tension and can be very healing.

Always consult your GP before starting any new regime or self treatment.
