Page 1 of 2 Q. I am too embarrassed to go to my doctor as I think I have worms. Is there anything that I do to get rid of them? There are many different types of worms but the most common are roundworms. Worms are extremely contagious and early treatment is vital so it is essential that your GP treats you. Do not be embarrassed. This problem is extremely common and you doctor will be used to dealing with the problem. Symptoms may vary depending on the type of worm and the severity of infestation. You may experience symptoms of bloating, stomach pain, vomiting, difficulty breathing, insomnia, itching on the soles of the feet, fever, rash, loss of appetite and discoloured stools, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, tiny red abrasions, weight loss, vomiting and diarrhoea. One of the consequences of parasite infestation is malabsorption of nutrients. There is a disease called Trichinosis, which is caused by not treating roundworm conditions. This condition can lead to muscle damage and cardiac or neurological complications. Worms can be contracted via improper disposal of human or animal waste, walking barefoot on contaminated soil, ingestion of eggs or larvae from uncooked or partially cooked meat and contaminated drinking water. Natural treatments vary depending on the type and extent of infestation but popular herbs include black walnut extract, which destroys many types of worms and wormwood (do not use during pregnancy). Grapefruit seed extract can be very effective for destroying parasites. Calendula cream may help with itching. Check with your doctor before using any natural products to resolve this problem. |
