I have been suffering with a fungal infection in my toenails. What can I do? Fungal infection of the nails is common. The infection can cause the nails to become thick and unsightly. They are usually a greenish/yellow colour. Sometimes the whole nail comes away. The skin next to the nail may be inflamed, scaly and painful. If left untreated, the infection may eventually destroy the nail and the nail bed. Toenails are more prone to fungal infections than fingernails. Fungal infection of the nails is usually caused by a fungal skin infection, such as athlete's foot. A nail that has been damaged may also be vulnerable to an infection. People suffering with diabetes, psoriasis, poor circulation, and a poor immune system should also take extra care. Nail infections are more common in people who live in hot humid climates and with people who smoke. Other nail conditions can sometimes look like a fungal infection so confirm the diagnosis with your doctor, and a visit to the chiropodist may be helpful. Basic hygiene is essential. Keep your nails cut short, and file down any thickened nail. Use a separate pair of scissors to cut the infected nail(s) to prevent contaminating the other nails. Have your feet in the fresh air as much as possible and avoid wearing synthetic socks or shoes for prolonged periods. Garlic is the best natural remedy for fungal nail infections. Simply crush some fresh cloves and place them in contact with the affected area .The skin should be washed before and after application. Garlic powder can also be used to combat toenail fungus. A light dusting of it is an easy way to get a healthy dose of this powerful natural remedy. If you cannot bare the aroma of garlic, try tea tree oil. Tea tree oil is a natural antiseptic that is very effective at fighting fungus. Take some tea tree oil and mix with a few drops of olive oil. Apply this mixed oil on the affected toenails. Lavender can also be used with the tea tree oil. Cider vinegar has been used for centuries as a cure for nail disorders. Add some apple cider vinegar to warm water and mix well. Soak your toenails in the water for few minutes. Dry completely. It is important to deal with the underlying condition that is causing a fungal flare up. Boost your immune system. Eat plenty of garlic, onions, fresh fruit and vegetables. Reduce foods that create dampness in the body such as wheat and dairy products and introduce a vitality enhancing diet full of salads, nuts and fresh foods and good multivitamin and mineral formula. Always consult your GP before starting any new regime or self treatment.
