What is the enzyme Coenzyme Q10 (co.q10)?

Co.Q10 is a vitamin-like substance present in most human cells except red blood cells and eye lens cells. It is responsible for the production of the body's own energy. In each human cell, food energy is converted into energy with the aid of Co.Q10.

Ninety-five per cent of all of the human's body energy is converted with the aid of Co.Q10. Organs with the highest energy requirements, such as the heart, lungs and the liver, have the highest Co.Q10 concentrations.

Numerous studies have confirmed the role of Co.Q10 in treating heart conditions and cancer. One of the most remarkable findings was that supplementation with Co.Q10 may extend the lifespan of people with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS).

Given its effect on the heart muscle, researchers have studied Co.Q10 for possible effects it may have in people with heart arrhythmias. While most studies have proven inconclusive, preliminary research has reported improvement in diabetics with premature ventricular beats - a form of heart arrhythmia.

Some researchers now believe that Co.Q10 may also be useful for modulating blood pressure. A number of preliminary trials have reported that Co.Q10 may reduce blood pressure in individuals with hypertension, after about two to four months of treatment. Supplements of Co.Q10 may also boost physical performance and reduce feelings of tiredness associated with exercise and eliminate fatigue.

Co.Q10 is a powerful antioxidant that acts as a defence against free radicals and helps the human body preserve vitamin E, the major antioxidant of blood cholesterol and cell membranes.

Since absorption of Co.Q10 is poor, high quality supplementation of CoQ10 is recommended for maximum potency. There is exciting on going research about the beneficial effects of Co Q 10 and degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. As we age, our Co.Q10 levels diminish, abetting the aging process of the skin. Many beauty products are now including Co.Q10 as it has been shown to reduce the signs of aging.
