I have been told that I have an enlarged prostate. Is there anything that I can do to reduce symptoms?

The prostate gland is the male organ that produces semen. Your prostate grows as a child from about the size of a pea to the size of a walnut.

Many men in their late 40s to 50s will develop prostate problems, due to their prostate beginning a second growing spurt. This growth can cause a compression of the urethra, resulting in partially blocked urine flow. Another side affect of this growth may be that the muscles around the urethra contract. This again reduces urine flow, creates pressure and can be very uncomfortable. If urine flow is impeded, the bladder will not empty completely causing further problems and requiring medical intervention.

Anyone experiencing these symptoms must visit a doctor for a full check up to eliminate prostate cancer or other urinary problems. If they find out that it is just an enlarged prostate, there is a lot that you can do to help improve the condition and to prevent it from getting any worse.

Hormonal imbalances in men is a usual cause of an enlarged prostate. Some research suggests that over exposure to synthetic hormones can disrupt the male hormone, testosterone. Things like pesticides, plastic dishes/bottles, cling film and some non organic processed meat may contain chemicals that are best avoided, particularly during adolescence.

In many cases, symptoms of an enlarged prostate can improve significantly if a healthy diet is introduced. Zinc and vitamin E are essential, so make sure you are taking a regular multi vitamin and mineral supplement. Eat plenty of pumpkin seeds as they have a very positive affect on hormones. The herb saw palmetto can also be effective with enlarged prostate conditions. You will also need to take adequate amounts of essential fatty acids, such as oily fish and flax oil. Eat plenty of lentils, soya, whole grains, broccoli and other green leafy vegetables.

I have had a lot of success in my clinic with enlarged prostate problems by introducing these foods in combination with a series of acupuncture sessions, homeopathy and an appropriate exercise programme. Make sure you are also consuming plenty of fluids, preferably filtered water. If your doctor prescribes any medication, make sure to continue taking as advised.
