I suffer with constant lower back pain. I'm able to go about everyday activities but it is beginning to get me down. Any advice?

There are plenty of things that you can do to help yourself. Firstly, it is important to establish the underlying cause by consulting your GP. Once this is established, there are a few areas that need to be addressed, including diet, exercise, posture and finding the right treatment. There are many different useful therapies available for back problems including: acupuncture, massage, physiotherapy, osteopathy, chiropractic care and the Alexander technique.

It is also important to consider the role of stress. Relaxation techniques, yoga and meditation facilitate the body to relax enough to help prevent further damage by reducing general tension and anxiety.

Diet is important too. Eat a good healthy diet with plenty of vegetables, fruit and foods rich in Omega 3, such as salmon, tuna, mackerel and halibut fish. These foods are rich in important minerals, such as calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, and sodium, all of which are necessary for a healthy spine. Cut out red meat and reduce dairy products. Introduce a good multivitamin/mineral. There are also some excellent natural anti-inflammatory supplements available at health food stores, including Quercitin, Bromelain, and Devil's Claw (seek advise before taking any supplements).

Exercise will benefit the spine tremendously. Regular exercise is crucial. Get a set of excises from a qualified practitioner and practise daily without fail. You will notice a major difference within a couple of weeks.

Always consult your GP before starting any new regime or self treatment.
