Do you have any advice for my daughter who is having problems conceiving? Chinese Medicine has been treating fertility problems for over 2,500 years. Acupuncture and traditional Chinese Medicine are very effective at treating what is sometimes called 'unexplained infertility' as well as treating undiagnosed conditions. There are many reasons why a woman may have difficulty conceiving. These may include age, irregular menstruation, hormone imbalance or a blood deficiency. Acupuncture will help to improve ovarian function, produce better quality eggs, reduce stress, reduce side affects of reproductive hormonal treatments and decrease uterine contractibility for implantation. It can also assist in improving sperm count, motility and morphology and male reproductive problems. Acupuncture is extremely successful with fertility problems because it works on many different levels at the same time. One of the most important factors is that it will reduce emotional stress and any anxiety associated with not conceiving. It can be used safely alongside any other orthodox treatments as well, although check with your doctor first. An acupuncturist should also look at your diet. Adequate nutrition is an essential element to any fertility programme. Recent studies have shown that if a woman on fertility drugs receives acupuncture concurrently, chances of conceiving can go up by 65 per cent. Always consult your GP before starting any new regime or self treatment.
