I have just been diagnosed with polymyalgia. Can you help? Polymyalgia Rheumatica (PMR) is an inflammatory disorder that causes widespread muscle aching, particularly in the morning after sleep. It is unclear what exactly causes polymyalgia, but a compromised immune system, genetics and environmental factors, certain viruses, race, sex (it usually affects women) and aging may play a role. Symptoms include moderate to severe aching in the muscles of the neck, shoulders, upper arms, thighs and hips. Sometimes people also experience fatigue, weight loss and a mild fever. Anaemia may also develop. The condition can, if left untreated, last several years. It can, however, clear up within several months if treated correctly. A percentage of people with polymyalgia may develop giant cell arthritis, causing the arteries in the temple, neck and arms to become swollen and inflamed. Doctors will usually prescribe medication that will reduce pain and inflammation until the symptoms clear up. Complementary approaches use acupuncture and nutrition. Acupuncture is excellent for reducing pain. It will also strengthen and regulate the body's natural immune response. Regular exercise will also reduce the pain and improve overall wellbeing. Gentle yoga will help stimulate blood circulation and reduce stiffness in the joints. Good nutrition is vital. Visit a herbalist or naturopath to find out which foods and herbs will support your individual constitution and physical profile. Fresh fruits, plenty of vegetables, whole grains and fish, combined with eliminating caffeine, alcohol and salt will improve general health. Consume plenty of bone-building nutrients, such as calcium and vitamin D. Supplements containing magnesium chloride or citrate, selenium, zinc, kelp and vitamin B complex will support the immune system. Reduce strenuous activity or anything that may cause muscle strain and ask for help when lifting heavy objects. Always consult your GP before starting any new regime or self treatment.
