I suffer with reoccurring blepharitis. Can anything be done?

Blepharitis is an inflammation of the eyelids and eyelashes. Symptoms range from red, irritated, itchy eyelids and the formation of dandruff-like scales on eyelashes. It is a common eye disorder generally caused by a bacterial infection, low immunity or a general skin condition such as dandruff of the scalp or acne rosacea.

Blepharitis is not contagious and does not cause any permanent damage to eyesight. There two types of blepharitis: anterior blepharitis occurs at the outside front edge of the eyelid where the eyelashes are attached and posterior blepharitis, which affects the inner surface of the eyelid that comes in contact with the eyeball.

Eyelid hygiene is crucial. A regular cleaning routine with normal saline solution in conjunction with eye compresses may help. You may need to treat any underlying conditions that may be causing the problem such as dandruff or bacterial infection. Your doctor, health care professional, naturopath or herbalist will be able to advise you. Herbs can be used. They can be made into tea and used as an eyewash, eye drops or compresses. Eyebright, calendula, comfrey, oregon grape root, and goldenseal are often recommended. Homeopathy is also extremely safe and effective. Boost the immune system with a regular intake of vitamins, healthy food (including fresh vegetable juices and garlic) and echinacea. Drink plenty of water and practice eye exercises to increase blood circulation to the area.

Always consult your GP before starting any new regime or self treatment.
