I suffer with constant lower back pain. I'm able to go about everyday activities but it is beginning to get me down. Any advice?

Firstly you need to go to your GP who may refer you to a specialist to get a diagnosis to rule out anything serious. Following that there are plenty of things that you can do to help yourself. Firstly, it is important to establish the underlying cause. Once this is established there are three areas that need to be addressed: Diet, exercise and finding the right treatment. There are many different useful therapies available for back problems including: acupuncture, physiotherapy, osteopathy, chiropractic care, the alexander technique and massage.

It is also important to consider the role of stress. Relaxation techniques, yoga and meditation facilitate the body to relax enough to help prevent further damage by reducing general tension and anxiety.

Diet is important. Eat a good healthy, diet with plenty of vegetables, fruit and foods rich in Omega 3 such as salmon, tuna, mackerel and halibut fish. These foods are rich in important minerals such as calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, and sodium all of which are necessary for a healthy spine. Cut out red meat. Introduce a good multivitamin/mineral. There are also some excellent natural anti-inflammatory supplements available at health food stores including Quercitin, Bromelain, and Devil's Claw (seek advise before taking any supplements).

Exercise will benefit the spine tremendously. Regular exercise is crucial. Get a set of exercises from a qualified practitioner who may also help with posture and practice daily.

Always consult your GP before starting any new regime or self-treatment.
