I have developed acne out of the blue. I am 44 years old. What can I do?
Adult acne is a common problem, particularly among people between 30 and 50 years of age. It is more common in women than men. Adult acne is usually caused by some kind of hormonal imbalance, or it can be due to general lifestyle factors, such as an inadequate diet combined with lack of exercise and limited fresh air.

Stress can also upset the delicate balance of hormones, which can contribute to the development of acne. Reduce stress through a combination of exercise and relaxation techniques. In rare cases, allergies can be responsible for spots on the body.

A naturopath will take a thorough case history to try to establish the cause of the problem. They will then recommend a detox programme combining food, herbs and exercise. They may also introduce acupuncture (with or without needles), herbs and homeopathic remedies to balance hormones (when necessary).

Recommended herbs usually include dandelion, burdock, red clover tea and milk thistle. It is advisable, however, to see a qualified practitioner and your GP before taking herbs.

Supplementary nutrients, such as Vitamin B Complex, Zinc, Vitamin A, Chromium, Selenium and Essential Fatty Acids, can also help. Acidophilus supplements are also recommended. Drinking green tea may help, as it is fantastic for maintaining healthy skin. Topical remedies such as home remedies made with aloe vera, lime, honey, turmeric, tea tree oil or oatmeal are also recommended. Some people who have suffered reoccurring acne have reported excellent results from using laser and IPL treatments.

Wash with herbal and natural products and only use pure, natural cosmetics on the skin. Over the counter commercial products may be effective in the short term but over long periods of time people have experienced side effects. Your GP might refer you to a skin specialist if your symptoms persist.

Always consult your GP before starting any new regime or self treatment.
