The fifth Annual Childcare Conference will take place on Saturday 1 December in the Galway Bay Hotel, Salthill.

The two themes of this year's annual conference, hosted by the Galway City and County Childcare Committee are 'Self esteem and our children', and 'How food can improve your child's behaviour, mood and learning'. The conference opens at 9.30am and will be officially launched by Mr Brendan Smith, TD, Minister for Children.

Dr Alex Richardson will give a talk about her groundbreaking research into the effects of nutrition. Dr Richardson is one of the UK's leading researchers whose work has found that the amount of fat and sugar in children's diets has a negative impact, not only on their physical health, but also on their brain. Her book, 'They are what you feed them' was first published in 2006.

Mr Fergus Finlay, Chief Executive of Barnardos, meanwhile, will speak about self-esteem and children. Mr Finlay is the author of three best-selling books. He has founded a number of organisations that campaign for the rights of people with disabilities, and is currently Chairperson of Special Olympics Ireland. He broadcasts regularly on radio and television, and contributes a weekly column to the Irish Examiner.

Speaking about the conference, Mary Giblin, Manager of Galway Childcare Committee, said, ?Our annual Childcare Conference has gone from strength to strength each year. In this, our fifth year, we are once again looking forward to meeting with parents and childcare professionals to discuss and debate the new challenges we all face as we aim to give our children the best possible start in life.?
