Galway Public Libraries for BOOKS and IDEAS
Readers may be interested in the following books, which have been added to stock at Galway City Library:
Clara, by Luisa Valenzuela
This crisp translation of the first major novel of Argentine writer Valenzuela, published in 1966 in Spanish, is raw, sensuous and stylish as a tango. After her father makes it clear she is no longer welcome at home, country girl Clara comes to Buenos Aires and drifts into a life of prostitution. But her own hopeful nature brings a touch of magic even to these sordid circumstances. She drifts from one man to the next because she sees every man as a possible saviour. A writer renowned for her lyrical, expressionistic exploration of male-dominated Argentine society, Valenzuela here chronicles the bizarre, brutal existence of characters on the fringes.
The Snack Thief, by Andrea Camilleri
When an elderly man is stabbed to death in an elevator and a crewman on an Italian fishing trawler is machine-gunned by a Tunisian patrol boat off Sicily's coast, only detective Montalbano, with his keen insight into human nature, suspects the link between the two incidents. His investigation leads to the beautiful Karima, an impoverished housecleaner and sometime prostitute, whose young son is caught stealing other schoolchildren's midmorning snacks.
Greek Lyric Poetry: A New Translation, by Sherod Santos
Sherod Santos's new translation of classical poems answers Rosetti's mandate that ‘the only true motive for putting poetry into a fresh language must be to endow a fresh nation with one more possession of beauty.’ Santos must be commended for bringing back into the limelight some beautiful ancient poetry in a manner that will, at the very least, engage the modern reader to consider that a mere two thousand years does little to change the human experience.
