Readers may be interested in the following books which have been added to stock at Galway City Library:

Julia, by Ana Maria Moix

Set against the backdrop of Franco's 40-year dictatorship, Julia's personal history reveals its own small tyrannies, intrigues and struggles for independence, laced with the sweetness and sadness of first loves, losses, and hopeless entanglements. This autobiographical novel marks the first appearance of the daring style and consummate skill that distinguishes Ana María Moix's work and quickly established her as one of the most innovative and entertaining writers in contemporary Spain. Julia's story is, in the delicately balanced authority and lightness of Moix's language, ultimately one of hope.

The Doctor Stories, by William Carlos Williams

The poet William Carlos Williams felt that his work as a family physician enabled him to discover something much deeper: 'the hunted news I get from some obscure patients' eyes is not trivial. It is profound'. According to Williams, such news reveals 'a new, a more profound language,' a language that he calls 'poetry'. For Williams, the roles of doctor and poet complement one another-'they are two parts of a whole.' This collection includes short stories (and an autobiographical excerpt) that centre on his life as a paediatrician in Rutherford, New Jersey.

The Kreutzer Sonata and other Short Stories, by Leo Tolstoy

Includes Tolstoy's 'How Much Land Does a Man Need?' in which the peasant Pahóm declares, 'Our only trouble is that we haven't land enough. If I had plenty of land, I shouldn't fear the Devil himself!' At the end of the story Pahóm's servant picks up the spade and digs a grave long enough for Pahóm to lie in, and buries him in it. Six feet from his head to his heels is all he needs. This is a simple, moving tale of life with a moral lesson.
