Readers may be interested in the following books, which have been added to stock at Galway City Library: ![]() Rachel Cusk. A Life's Work: On Becoming a Mother, by Rachel Cusk Rachel Cusk's new book on the old topic is a wonder. Cusk has written something fine and beautiful; the precision of her language and the depth of her insights lend such homey, unremarkable subjects as breastfeeding and engaging a babysitter an almost shocking newness. Motherhood is frequently a target for the broadest kind of humour, but although Cusk's book is sometimes very funny, she doesn't play for yucks, and this restraint brings a dignity to the subject and the experience that most of the other books lack. (Atlantic Monthly). Rachel Cusk reads at Cúirt on Saturday 26 April. The Secret Goldfish, by David Means David Means is an acclaimed American short story writer. His stories have appeared in The New Yorker, Harper's and Esquire. According to Adrienne Miller, "his world is populated by beaten people, characters whose luck is so bad it's damn near Russian. His are stories about loneliness, about the difficulty of human connections . . . and yet, wonder of wonders, they remain, above all else, generous, redemptive and hopeful." You can hear David Means read at Cúirt on Friday 25 April. As Meat Loves Salt, by Maria McCann Jacob Cullen, the unforgettable narrator in McCann's riveting, fiercely intelligent and brutal first novel, is a strapping mercenary soldier in 17th-century England's civil war. He's quick-tempered and easy on the eyes, and he is forced to flee his wedding ceremony with bride Caro when he learns that he is about to be accused of murder. But what is most impressive, and upsetting, about McCann's unsentimental book is her Shakespearean skill at showing how people's failings can be so entrenched as to be unalterable. (David Bahr). Maria McCann was born in Liverpool. She reads at Cúirt on Thursday 26 April.
