It’s the most wonderful time of the year and, with Santa Claus coming to town next month, the Galway City Business Association (GCBA) is calling on the people of Galway to light up the city together this Friday, 11 November at 5pm.
Mainguard Street will play host to a celebration of Galway’s Christmas lights, carols, festive activities and prizes as the city gets ready to embrace the festive season.
Chairperson of the GCBA, Cormac McGuckian outlined what people can expect from the evening.
“There’ll be plenty of choirs and carols to help us sing ourselves into the mood, not to mention our record geansaí nollaig challenge. Have you got your geansaí? – I have mine so let’s see if we can beat the record number of people at any one place and time wearing a geansaí Nollaig.
“Our evening will culminate at 5pm with MC Ollie Turner. Santa will arrive at 5.30pm on Galway’s Fire Engine outside Brown Thomas where he will be escorted down Shop Street by Johnny Richards on his Galway Bay FM motorbike for the official switching-on of Galway’s Christmas lights on Mainguard Street at 6pm.”
Lighting up the Heart of Galway promises to be a sensational night of seasonal fun with Ignite Gospel Choir, Claire Quinn, Orla Tighe, Medtronic Choir, Carol Singers and Q Club Variety Group with prizes galore for some lucky winners on the night.
GCBA are also supporting the Galway Simon Community Christmas Hamper appeal. They are seeking donations of the following non-perishable goods that can be brought along on the night and given directly to Galway Simon volunteers: tinned food, pasta, rice, cereal, tea and coffee, soups, hygiene products and treats. This will help make Christmas special for many families and individuals facing homelessness especially in the coming cold months.
The festive season is expected to attract more visitors than ever to Galway on the back of a successful year including the annual Macnas parade last weekend and the European Capital of Culture 2020 title.
Get into the spirit of Christmas this Friday, 11 November for a truly memorable Christmas experience.
