Readers may be interested in the following books, which have been added to stock at Galway City Library: ![]() The Skin of the Sky, by Elena Poniatowska Portrays an inquisitive, stargazing boy, Lorenzo, who, against tremendous odds, becomes a renowned astronomer. Lorenzo's calling enables Poniatowska not only to write of the heavens with mythic awe and ravishing lyricism but also to ponder the conundrums of space and time, our precarious place in the universe, and the great divide between Mexico's educated elite and countless illiterate poor. Poniatowska is a profoundly sensuous writer and she vividly and purposefully describes earthly life as Lorenzo grows up on a farm, discovers sex and runs with a hard-drinking and ambitious crowd. How to Breathe Underwater, by Julie Orringer How apt it is that water is Orringer's ruling element and reigning metaphor, because her short stories are exceptionally translucent, deep and fluid. Her young characters, primarily girls whose mothers are gravely ill, depressed in the wake of divorce, missing, or dead, are drawn to ponds, pools and hot tubs where immersion in water is cleansing, even holy, but also deadly. Radiant in their explicit sensory descriptions and exquisitely attuned to the overwhelming tide of emerging sexuality, Orringer's unnerving and fiercely beautiful stories delve to the very core of life's mysteries. The Savage Detectives, by Roberto Bolaño 'And then I never saw him again.' This phrase recurs with eerie frequency in the work of the Chilean-born writer Roberto Bolaño, who died four years ago, in Barcelona, at the age of 50. This novel, his major work, here beautifully translated by Wimmer, will allow English speaking readers to discover a truly great writer. It's no coincidence that Bolaño's most heartbreaking creation, the rebellious, doomed poet at the heart of his masterwork, 'The Savage Detectives', is named Ulises. Bolaño was dyslexic, did not enjoy the classroom and dropped out of high school, devoting himself to poetry.
