Unacceptable conditions at Galway Post Office |

Dear Editor,
Am I the only person who finds the situation at
Galway Post Office totally unacceptable? For more years than I care to
remember, I have been using Galway Post Office and the situation
appears to be getting worse.
It is practically always understaffed/undermanned. There appears to be
queues in existence more often than not. When the queues do exist,
there appears to never be a full compliment of staff. There never
appears to be anybody in charge. Certain people seem to think that they
do not have to queue and jump it on a relatively continuous basis under
the guise of having a parcel, requiring a Lotto ticket or posting a
registered letter (which for some reason allows one to officially to
jump the queue). People interpret this rule quite liberally without any
apparent monitoring.
While all of this goes on, of course, that
section of the community, which is weakest, the elderly, the single
parent and the marginalised, stand patiently, accepting the inevitable
with no one to speak for them. I suppose one could go as far as stating
that they stand and queue in quite an intimidating atmosphere.
The
Post Office itself is dour, monotonous, uninviting and, at times,
unclean. It is our General Post Office - believe it or not!
Nobody
seems to care. If they do and have voiced concerns, then clearly they
have not been listened to. One shudders to think of what our many
tourists, national and international, think of our General Post Office
when they visit.
My concern, however, remains entirely with the
loyal customer base of An Post who regularly frequent Galway Post
Office. When is somebody in authority or in the media going to speak
out?
As I am a regular user of the Post Office, I am not going
to identify myself for fear of being penalised. I feel frustrated
enough each time I leave the GPO without fear of being boycotted for
speaking out. This is a scandal. At a time when our country is flush
with money, the weak in our society continue, without question, to
accept conditions, which existed and possibly still do exist in parts
of Eastern Europe prior to the taking down of the Berlin wall.
If
you doubt anything I say, why not join us for a period of weeks, or
alternatively speak to fellow city dwellers who frequent this building.
If you have no patience or get hot under the collar, then this place is
not for you.
I ask you for God's sake to use your position to do something.
Yours sincerely,
Aged over 65
