Dear Editor, It was with deep regret that I learnt of the recent death of Cllr Michael Leahy. I wanted to write a short tribute to him in your paper as an ordinary Galway citizen. In my role as secretary of our Residents Association, Michael was helping us with our campaign to get our estate handed over to Galway City Council. He was a great help to me. When we met, he left a lasting impression on me. He really was a true gentleman, so easy to converse with and a great listener. For the first time, I met a politician, who truly cared about his constituents and worked tirelessly to help him. An example of Michael's dedication was when one Saturday morning I received a call from him apologising for not being in contact for a while. He explained that he had not been well, but had not forgotten about us. I was stunned that he took the time to worry about us, and he so ill. This is the type of person that Michael was. Because of his dedication to helping us, improvements are beginning to happen in our estate and we will keep working towards our goal and try to finish what he started. I wish on behalf of Sceilg Ard Residents Association to extend our sympathies to his family and friends at this sad time. Galway City Council has lost a great ambassador. Thank you Michael. May he Rest in Peace. Janice Harnett, Secretary, Sceilg Ard Residents Association |
